Simcoe County District School Board

Toronto, Ontario – May 5, 2015 – Home Energy Renewables Inc. (HER) and the Simcoe Country District School Board (SCDSB) are pleased to announce that Elmvale District High School (EDHS) will be the pilot site for a renewable energy project to enhance curriculum delivery.  Though the curriculum links are widespread, this project will support science and technology programs with authentic and real-time applications for students. An Energy Ball (wind turbine) will be erected on a 15m pole which will support the Energy Ball, two solar panels and storage batteries needed to power a parking lot light. Students will be able to monitor the energy output through a monitor located in the main hallway in the school.

“We are very pleased to be participating in the project. Renewable energy sources are a critical part of our future and I can’t think of a better place than in the hands of students to guide us into this next evolution of renewable energy production.” said Andy King, President of HER.

“The SCDSB is very excited to be part of this pilot project with HER. The students and staff proposed this idea as a way to enhance learning across the curriculum, and we are proud to further support their learning,” said Steve Parker, Manager of Design & Construction for the SCDSB.

“To have this renewable energy project installed at Elmvale District High School is tremendous, and will provide learning opportunities that extend well beyond our classrooms.  We have purposefully located the Energy Ball and its monitoring system in a well-travelled area of our school site to encourage curiosity and interest by all,” said Charlene Scime, Principal.  ”Our entire school community is looking forward to the enhanced learning that will come from having this solar and turbine generator at EDHS.”

The project will begin in late summer and be ready for the start of the 2015/2016 school year.
